THE 6 PRINCIPLES OF NATURAL MEDICINE
While different naturopathic physicians may practice somewhat differently, spending time with patients and listening to their concerns is common. Naturopathic medicine embraces the following six principles
The Healing Power of Nature
An inherent self-healing process is recognized, so health care includes an attempt to remove obstacles and support this self-healing process.
Identify and Treat the Causes
Symptoms are seen as guideposts in the search for and treatment of underlying causes, instead of focusing on just eliminating the symptoms.
First Do No Harm
Methods and substances are chosen that minimize harmful side effects, and hopefully enhance overall health as well.
Doctor as Teacher
Patients are educated and encouraged to take responsibility for their own health, giving them tools to take care of themselves.
Treat the Whole Person
Illnesses can cause mental and emotional symptoms as well as physical symptoms, so treatments and diagnosing take environmental, genetic and social factors into consideration.
Prevention
Good health care includes the prevention of future illnesses, so education and assessment of risk factors are part of an individualized health care approach.

MEET DR. ALLEN
Dr. Allen graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. In addition, she completed two extra certificate programs. One included an extensive internship focused on women’s health and pediatrics including attending natural births. Her other extra certification is in classical homeopathy, which included several extra homeopathy classes, written exams, oral exam, case management supervision and research. Before attending naturopathic medical school, Dr. Allen was a social worker, administrator, math teacher, soymilk maker (before aseptic packaging!) and food co-op worker/owner.
After graduation Dr. Allen worked in one of the few coveted family medicine residencies offered by her profession. She spent half of her time teaching medical students and half seeing patients under the supervision of experienced doctors. Since then she has been in private practice in Portland for 20 years with a lot of experience working with other health care providers; treating a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses; and developing an expertise in hormone problems and challenging cases; along with running a busy general family practice. She and her husband recently relocated to Eugene to live closer to their daughter who is an elementary music teacher in the 4J school district. They enjoy walking, biking, cooking, shopping at farmer’s markets and the friendly people of Eugene.
Dr. Allen spent much of her career nurturing new graduates from naturopathic, acupuncture, midwifery, massage, counseling and medical assistants in a busy group practice that she ran and brought all the patients in for. For many years she was one of very few alternative practitioners who offered same day urgent care (before there were urgent care clinics so commonly). She finds that careful nurturing of the doctor and patient relationship to be the most important part of health care she can offer.
